Why Islamic Fasting Is Different Than Other Types of Fasting (ref. 7)

The Islamic fast, is different from the above "Diet Plans". It has beneficial features of both plans. Its unique medical benefits are due to the following factors:

1. As compared to other diet plans, in fasting during Ramadan, there is no malnutrition or inadequate calorie intake since there is no restriction on the type or amount of food intake during Iftaar or Sahar. This was confirmed by M.M.Hussaini (ref. 6) during Ramadan 1974 when he conducted dietary analysis of Muslim students at the University of North Dakota State University at Fargo. He concluded that calorie intake of Muslim students during fasting was at two thirds of NCR- RDA.

2. Fasting, in Ramadan is voluntarily undertaken. It is not a prescribed imposition from a physician. In the hypothalamus part of the brain there is a center called "lipostat" which controls the body mass. When severe and rapid weight loss is achieved by starvation diet, the center does not recognize this as normal and, therefore re-programs itself to cause weight gain rapidly once the person goes off the starvation diet. So the only effective way of losing weight is slow, self-controlled, and gradual weight loss by modifying our behavior, and the attitude about eating while eliminating excess food. Ramadan is a month of self-regulation and self-training if terms of food intake thereby causing hopefully, a permanent change in lipostat reading.

3. In Islamic fasting, we are not subjected to a diet of selective food only (i.e. protein only, fruits only etc). An carry breakfast, before dawn is taken and then at sunset fast is broken with something sweet i.e. dates, fruits, juices to warrant any hypoglycemia followed by a regular dinner later on.

4. Additional prayers are prescribed after the dinner, which helps metabolize the food. Using a calorie counter, I counted the amount of calories burnt during extra prayer called Traveeh. It amounted to 200 calories. Islamic prayer called Salat uses all the muscles and joints and can be placed in the category of a mild exercise in terms of caloric out put.

5. Ramadan fasting is actually an exercise in self discipline. For those who are a chain smoker, or nibble food constantly, or drink coffee every hour, it is a good way to break the habit, hoping that the effect will continue after the month is over.

6. Psychological effect of Ramadan fasting are also well observed by the description of people who fast. They describe a feeling of inner peace and tranquility. The prophet has advised them "If one slanders you or aggresses against you, tell them I am fasting". Thus personal hostility during the month is minimal. Crime rate in muslim countries fall during this month.

Recognized as someone who likes to smile, diligently to help people and have many friends. Born on August 25, 1989, he grew up in Kuala Nerang, kedah and attended school in Sekolah Menengah Sains Sultan Mohamad Jiwa.He is the second of four siblings. He held the position of Public Relation & Information in scincess. He also active in ARCIIUM and one of the IIUM life saver team. During this semester break he worked part time in Kuantan. On 15 June 2011, entire IIUM was shocked by a very sad news. He drowned at Pasir Kubur at Kenau River when wanted to save his friend also working in the same place with him. His family arrived at the mortuary at 7.30pm and continue to be brought to the Masjid Tengku Afzan. He was interred in lundang, Kota Bharu, kelantan.

Surely, the entire IIUM especially for Sciencess,and his friends will felt this great loss.may his soul Vis Mercy..Al-fatihah........

Abu Dardaa radiallaahu 'anhu said:"For everything there is a polish and the polish for the heart is the dhikr of Allaah".

Al-Bayhaqee relates from Ibn 'Umar radiallaahu 'anhu that AlIaah's Messenger sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam said: "For everything there is a polish, and the polish for the hearts is the dhikr (remembrance) of Allaah. There is nothing more potent in saving a person from the punishment of Allaah than the dhikr of Allaah." It was said: Not even Jihaad in the path of Allaah. So he replied: "Not even if you were to continue striking with your sword until it breaks."

There is no doubt that hearts becomes rusty just as copper and silver coins become rusty. The polish for [this rust] is the dhikr of AIlaah. This is because [dhikr] is like a polish [which polishes the heart] like a shiny mirror. When dhikr is left, the rust returns. But when dhikr resumes, then the heart is [again] polished. And hearts become rusty due to two things:-

(i) neglecting remembering Allaah, and

(ii) committing sins.

The polish for these two things is:-

(i) seeking Allaah's forgiveness and

(ii) dhikr.

8 Biggest Myths about EXAMINATIONS!!

Exams come again, as usual, at the end of the semester, to judge our academic performance for the semester. So Sciencess would like to wish all students of Kulliyyah of Science.. ALL THE BEST!! Here, we would share 8 biggest myths about exams, as mentioned by Mark Patterson, in his Secret of LazySmart Students. Why do examinations cause so much anxiety even to those who have already studied thoroughly? Many of our fears are based on wrong beliefs about tests in general, and these myths unfortunately prevent us from faring well. Be aware of the following myths about exams and see if you agree:

1) If you fail, you have wasted your time.

Nothing is wasted if you've tried your best. Many exams are graded subjectively and there's no reason for you to punish yourself over it. Besides, you have retained valuable information while studying and you can always take the exams again, that time with more knowledge on what will be taken up.

2) The exam could out you as a phony, exposing gaps in your education.

Are examiners going to pick your answers apart? Most likely not; in fact, they understand the pressures that an exam-taker goes through and usually go out of their way to deliberately seek out what's good in the answer you have given. The more important thing to keep in mind is that the person checking your paper would be pleased with a show of effort, so even if you don't know the proper procedure, try your best to put together all the principles you've learned and come up with an educated guess and an evident effort to attempt a solution.

3) You should have studied everything.

At the late revision stages, there's no use worrying about what you weren't able to cover. By then it would be too late to cram too much stuff in your head. However, with the remaining time that you have, choose the material for last-minute revision wisely. First, don't bother reading on the subject matter that hasn't been taken up – that won't be included. Second, brush up on the things that are more likely to come up on the exam. How would you know what these are? Here are some clues:

a. Try to recall subject matter which your professor has mentioned more than once.

b. Read about topics he has assigned as homework.

c. Take note of items he has written on the blackboard, such as terms, names, formulae, or dates. If they were written down, they're likely to be included. d. If your teacher tells you that a particular topic will be included in the exam, there's a 99% chance that it will.

4) If you haven't understood what you have read, there's no use taking the exam.

University is so much different than high school in that there's a large volume of information you have to learn about in so little time. Because of this, it's highly unlikely that you would be able to comprehend each topic fully. When examination time comes around, it's only normal that there is a huge percentage of information that you don't really understand. What's important is for you to ask your teacher or classmates for clarification if you still have the time. If not, take the exam anyway – half your classmates probably don't know it all, either - just remember to have the subject matter explained to you after the exam so it will add to your stock knowledge.

5) The exam questions are not easily understandable.

Test designers don't want to make it difficult; they just want to make it difficult for cheaters. Expect some degree of difficulty as it's not an IQ test or a test of general knowledge but of the course that you're taking up.

6) Exams are for people with good memories.

Very few teachers these days give exams based on your having to enumerate several items or memorize a list of terms. They are now more concerned with testing your comprehension skills – how well you analyze a topic, how you compare and contrast, how you relate an item to the general lesson.

7) Exams are just for people who work extremely fast.

There are time limits in examinations because these are based on topics that have already been taken up; it's not as if you're about to solve a Math problem whose solution method you'll be seeing for the first time. If there's anything new in an exam, it's only the manner of presentation: same principles, different data.

8) Calculations are either right or wrong.

As was mentioned earlier, credit is almost always given for effort. Even if you don't get the final answer right, you'll still be credited for attempting a solution. Who knows, you might even find a correct solution that has never been tried before! Mark is the author of the most comprehensive and straightforward exam success guide.

Sciencess Family Day '11 : A Short Report

Yesterday, 19th March 2011 was truly a pleasurable and satisfactory time. About 150 students of Kulliyyah of Science gathered at the IIUM field, spent their leisure time together for the precious annual Sciencess Family Day. This event was brought by the Sports and Recreation Bureau of Sciencess with a firm goal which is to strengthen brotherhood or the ukhuwwah among students. It was officiated by the Deputy Dean of Academic, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tengku Haziyamin in a very simple opening ceremony, yet significant and expressive. Through this event, we learned that it is not flesh and blood, but heart that makes us a family.

There were four houses; Coral, Chartreuse, Dodge Blue and Magenta led by Bro. Azri Jalil, Bro. Alias Rahman, Bro. Redhuan, and Bro. Ahmad respectively. All students have shown great fighting spirits throughout all the games and telematches arranged. It was the thrill of the fight that brought loud cheering and noises at the field for the whole 6 hours of the event. Undeniably, sometimes, situations became very uncontrollable, where the rules of the games were broken and the committee’s decisions were being argued. However, those are the things that bind us together and make us smile today. So, I consider those things as small matters because at the end of the day, a loving family should find everything forgivable, isn’t it?

Ahmad Badruddin Othman – President of SCIENCESS delightfully. Congratulations also to students of other houses. Don’t be frustrated, it’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the games. Kudos and praises to all the organizing committees headed by Bro. Abdul Ghafar Abdul Razak for their efforts in making this event a great success. Alhamdulillah, the ultimate gratitude dedicated to Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth.

Talentime Report

This event was successfully organized by Islamic Affairs Bureau (IAB) on 16th January 2011 in conjunction with closing ceremony Campus Dakwah Project (CamPro) 2011. This event which was a pantomime competition was the pioneer event in IIUM Kuantan Campus. It was held in Main Auditorium Kulliyyah of Science. The contestants were among students of IIUM Kuantan Campus and competed between each kulliyyahs in IIUM Kuantan Campus.

Objectives:

1. To deliver message that entertainment is not forbidden in Islam as long as it is accordance with Syariah,
2. To create awareness that Islamic teachings can also be spread through entertainment,
3. To promote the Islamic way of entertaining and to instill the feeling of responsibility to preach the Islamic teachings.
Thank you to Assoc. Prof. Dr. Jamaluddin Daud, Deputy Dean Student Affair who attended the closing ceremony of CamPro as VIP and was officially closed the event. There was also a nasyid performance by Army group after closing ceremony.
The contestants had to perform one episode from the life of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) or any Islamic story according to their creativity for not more than 15 minutes. Apart from gaining more knowledge about the sirah of Prophet, the contestants had also developed their soft skills that cannot be acquired during the usual class.
In addition, contestant also must follow rules and regulations that was determined by the organizer such as no mixing of gender in a group, no overacting and must observe their aurah.
The judges that involved during this event are Bro. Mohd Rizal Mat Isa from Kulliyyah of Nursing who also a national coach for coir group and Ustaz Hafiz Anuar Abdullah from Tilawah Division, CELPAD IIUM Kuantan Campus. Ustaz Hafiz was also commented about the entertainment in Islamic perspective briefly after the competition finished.
There was also a special performance, a Dikir Barat, by Putera Kenchana .
There were four groups participated in this competition.

4th place: Kulliyyah of Allied Health Science
Alhamdulillah, the event was running smoothly even there was a technical problem happened after closing ceremony. We got good comments from the audiences and hopefully this kind of event will organise again in IIUM Kuantan Campus.

SCIENCESS Registration Day or known before as SCIENCESS Client Day is a programme conducted to introduce the new line-up of SCIENCESS and the programme that will be conducted through out the tenure. It is also with the intention to recruit committees for the programme that will be organized by each bureau of SCIENCESS.

The objective for this programme is, to enhance students skills in society management and organization. secondly, to inform students on all programmes that will be organize by SCIENCESS, and lastly, to maximize and improve students’ talent and capability by join up as committee and participant of the programme.

This program will be held in KOS Resource Centre & CTS Lounge and will be started on 4 january until 6 january 2011. There are a booth will be open according to the bureau and the Students will find programs in detail that was planned by the bureau there. for the student who are interested to be a commitee for certain programme, they can fill the registration form provided.

All Kulliyyah of Science Students are invited, hope this program will give benefit to all students and encourage the students to participate and join up our programmes.

The Rape of Our Biah Solehah

On 31st December 2010 (Friday), we were all shocked at the news of theft happened in Mahallah Talhah 9, Indera Mahkota 2. In the incident, five laptops, handphones and some amount of money have successfully been grabbed by those bloody thieves.

To all those victims, please be patient, have a lot of doa so that Allah would give His guidance and help in this test. Please bear in mind that Allah would never give you a test unless He knows that you can face it. So, be strong, brothers.

Another thing that captures our attention is the loss of money in Wackos (Resource Centre). Entreprenuers who are selling food complained that they have lost a huge amount of their income lately.

Irresponsible students have simply taken the food without paying! That is one of the logical reasons, obviously. What has happened to our biah solehah? Once upon a time, we were very proud to introduce ourselves as having firm hold and strong ideas regarding moral principles and ethics. Yet, some of us cannot even be responsible for food fed into their own bellies?

Look, when you can afford to treat your girlfriend or boyfriend Secret Recipe, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Baskin Robbin, etc., why can't you afford to feed your own stomach on halal food which costs only about 50cents to RM1? What a shame!

Allah says in Surah Al-Nahl, verse 114 which means; "So eat of the sustenance which Allah has provided for you, lawful and good, and be grateful for the favours of Allah, if it is He whom you serve." Let us ponder this verse brothers and sisters. Let us not forget that Allah sees every single thing we do and it is going to be judged on the day of Judgement.

The second logical reason would be nothing else but theft! Yeah, there must be some well-masked thieves among us. Pity the entrepreneurs. They wake up early in the morning to prepare for those food, when at that time, we might still be in the blanket. But when they collect their money in the afternoon, the amount is not as it supposed to be. Where is the justice?

As part of the community of Kulliyyah of Science, we should all be erected up. We are no longer in the safe zone. People say, "Siakap senohong gelama ikan duri, bercakap bohong lama-lama mencuri." For the moment, theft in Mahallah.. theft in Wackos.. then, what's next? Are we going to let worse things to happen in our biah? It is now our responsibility to protect and prevent our biah solehah from this kind of hideous crime. Keep a close eye on every single suspicious thing around us.

IIUM Independence Ride 2010

"Congratulations!!" and "Well done!!"

IIUM Independence Ride 2010 was organized by IIUM Cycling Club in collaboration with MRC Talhah. It was a programme that bound the students from Gombak Campus and Kuantan Campus, built good characters, and led to the spirit of togetherness. Students rode in a team and gained knowledge through the 260 kilometres journey. The best part is.. majority of the participants from Kuantan Campus are students of Kulliyyah of Science. =)

The ride took the students on the road for three days. First day; Gombak to Bentong, second day; Bentong to Temerloh, third day; Temerloh to Kuantan. Their arrival was warmly welcomed by IIUM Kuantan Campus Director, sport officer, principle of Mahallah Talhah and students of IIUM Kuantan.

It is a pride for all IIUM community that they have built a bridge connecting Gombak Campus and Kuantan Campus. Once again, we congratulate them for their efforts and success!

Sciencess' community is now expanding

On 8^th December 2010, Kulliyyah of Science has received 219 new students. As usual, the highest number goes to the Biomedical Science Department with 106 number of students. 54 students registered for Biotechnology while another 59 students registered for Mathematical Science.

They have had their Taaruf Programme in our own Kuliyyah Of Science. Sciencess would proudly wish them warm welcome and congratulations for being able to further their studies to this Garden of Knowledge and Virtue.

As welcoming the new students, Public Relation and Information Bureau of Sciencess has organized a sharing moment programme on 14^th December 2010. This programme was done separately for brothers and sisters. Brothers were gathered at the lobby area of Mahallah Talhah 14, meanwhile, sisters were gathered at musolla CF sister. Seniors from each department and sciencess new lineup were invited to share their experiences with the new students. Additionally, SRC constituents for Kuliyyah of Science were also invited to give a few words.

We do hope that the new students would feel comfortable being in the new environment of Kuantan campus.Wassalam.

Attention to all, we have been informed that to change any link of 'iiu' to 'iium' in all online URL's such as websites and other online sites .

Therefore, to allow enough time for the migration, a landing page will be created to inform IIUM website visitors about the migration whereby the visitors will be directed to www.iium.edu.my. This landing page will take effect from 1st October until 30th November 2010. After 30th November 2010, visitors to the websites that still use the old 'iiu' domain will encounter broken link or page not found.

ASSALAMUALAIKUM to all members of SCIENCESS……

First of all, I never expected that I can get this post. Everybody knows we have very talented and promising candidates. But, all of you unanimously and decided to choose me. So, I feel very pleasured to be your voice as your president.

However, this post can be always transformed into a burden if it is not well-handled. So, I would like to ask all of you to work together with me and I also need your help and assistant in realizing the vision and mission of our Kulliyyah.

One of my missions is to see our Kulliyah is stand and to be viewed parallel to other Kulliyyah in IIUM Kuantan. Hope, that we can organize a number of joint venture programme in marketing, promoting and introducing our Kulliyah both inside and outside the campus. Insyaallah, we will organize an international programme like Hong Kong trip next time.

I also want to promote and encourage the habit or working together regardless the post and title. I wish for everyone to be supportive and compassionate in bringing SCIENCESS name to the highest level and recognition. So, it doesn’t matter if you are lecturer, staff and also student. Let us joint our hand together and looking forward to achieve our ambition. “We will never walk alone”.

I also want to remind all of you especially to all of the chosen EXCO here, every responsibility that have place on your shoulder should be taken seriously. So, I hope all of you do your job as well as you can together with the concept of IKHLAS.

If you have any ideas and suggestion to be shared, you are most welcome to do so. Please don’t be afraid to participate and expressing your idea to us.

Before I end my speech, let me quote the quotation from Saidina Abu Bakar As- Siddiq during the shifting of power as khalifah from our Prophet:

SCIENCESS Annual Grand Dinner or AGD is an annual programme held by our society. The objective of this event is to celebrate the final year students who will graduate from IIUM soon. It is also a symbol of appreciation to the graduating students for their hardworks and contributions during their 4 years of study. Although it issoudslike only for 4th year students, but all are also invited to join it.

As usual, dinner always has its own theme to make the event look grand and attractive. Therefore, this year's theme is Arabian Night...so be as 'arab' as you can!

~Another Review of Sciencess Ihya Ramadhan~

Report program for Ihya’ Ramadhan

Islamic Affair Bureau of Science Students Society has organized Sciencess Ihya’ Ramadhan starting from !0^th august 2010 until 25^th August 2010 with theme of “Enhancing Ibadah Reviving Faith”. Allhamdulillah, all the programs had been ran smoothly and got good response from sciencess students.

Tadarus Al-qur’an

Tadarus al-Quran program was held collaboratively with PROFAZ . The program was started from 10^th August 2010 until 25^th August 2010. Each department had to finish 30 juz and divided into small group which consist of five to six members for each group. Every group has their own leader. At the end of the program on 25^th August 2010, majlis khatam al-Qur’an organized by PROFAZ was held and each kuliyyah need to assign two representatives from their own kulliyyah. For kuliyyah of science, the two representatives were Ahmad Farhan bin Hassan and Muhammad Harithah bin Ariffin.

Grand Iftar SCIENCESS

Grand iftar sciencess was held on 19^th August 2010 at IIUM Mosque. Almost 400 students and some lecturers had been joined in this program. The program started with Quranic recitation, speeched by Deputy Dean of students Affair, Dr Jamaluddin b Daud, iftar, maghrib prayer, tarawikh, tazkirah by Dr Ibrahim Shogar, and lastly moreh. The menu for iftar included simple meal like kuih and kurma as well as heavy meal such as beriani rice. Throughout this program, all seniors, juniors, and lecturer were gathered together in one place, ate together, and prayed together. Thus, good bonding between them could be developed.

Exhibition

Exhibition was held from 16^th August 2010 until 20^th August 2010 at KOS lobby. Some elements emphasized during the exhibition were the importance of Ramadhan, celebration of ramadhan from different countries, lailatul qadr and Muslim scholars. Campaign on encouraging KOS members to recite Qur’an and do’a were also included by pasted some posters related around KOS.

Sahur

Sahur with orphanage is one of the outside campus programs. It was held on 21^st August 2010 at Rumah Permata Camar, Tanjung Lumpur from 4am until 10am. 40 students from different departments were selected to join this program. Some of activities were going happen there(^.^)

Community service

Community service is a program collaborated under IAB SCIENCESS, DNT IPhA and SRC. This program was held on 21^st August 2010 at Masjid Taman Balok Makmur Kuantan from 11am until 11pm. 100 participants was selected to join this program. Many activities were done such as health screening, fardhu ain class, motivational talk, exhibition, bubur lambuk giving ceremony, donation, and “”.

hi guys! how are u? we hope that everything that you planned went well and may we all are in Allah's blessing (^_^)

hmm...do you still remember about our friends, who were involved in an accident recently? I bet you do eh~

They are 5 of them, all are first year students. 2 of them are from Biomedical Science (muhsin and izwar), another 2 are from CTS (akif and hafiz) and another 1 is from pharmacy course (izzat).

From our recent visit, Akif went home already. Meanwhile,hafiz and izzat have been transfered to the hospital at their respective state.Lastly,Izwar is getting better, currently he only needs a very low pressure for the ventilator machine. According to the nurses in charge, he can hear us now.So,it is highly recommended for you guys to give him a visit, say hi and give some motivated words...show your support. Guys, let's pray for them...may Allah gives them and their family strength and patience.

Sciencess Ihya Ramadhan Review

SCIENCESS Grand Iftar (19^th August 2010)

One way to celebrate Ramadan was by sharing iftar together following the sunnah.

The Messenger of Allaah (salallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam) said,

“Whoever feeds a fasting person will have a reward like that of the fasting person, without any reduction in his reward.”

[Ahmad and Al-Nasai. Also verified by Al-Albani as sahih]

Sciencess grand iftar is an annually program of Kuliyyah of Science (KOS). It aims is to bring students, lecturer and staff together from various racial and national background of all members of KOS to have iftar together in this month of barakah. Moreover, when all members of KOS being together, they can strengthen their ukhuwwah by getting know each other especially between senior and junior, as well as students and lecturer.

Normally this events is usually held at resource centre of Kuliyyah of Science but due to increasing number of student attend the grand iftar this year on 19^th August 2010, the place had been changed to IIUM Mosque at Kuliyyah of Medic (KOM) as the resource centre is not enough to occupy many students this year. With about 400 students and staff showing up for the event, it was a great number of people took part compared to the previous years.

The program started at 6.30 pm with tadarrus and video show. Then at 7.20pm, simple meal which is kueh and dates given to every student and after maghrib prayer the students then being given “nasi beriani” each and the program continue until tarawih prayer and finished with moreh.

Eating in a group as done in this iftar is not the same as eating alone, a simple menu can become special one due to eating together because of bonding or ukhuwwah being developed during eating together. As the prophet said:

“The fasting person has two times of delight. He is delighted when he breaks his fast and delighted when He meets his Lord. And verily the foul odour from the mouth of the fasting person is better to Allah than the fragrance of musk perfume.”

[Al-Bukhari no. 1904 and Muslim no. 161/1151]

Thus, the programme runs smoothly even though there are some unexpected situation occurred but with the professionalism of the committee, the program has been conducted successfully and most of the feedback got from students are positive feedback.

The National Mosque: Designed and supervised by the Federal Public Works Department the building occupies an area of 2090 sq m . The mosque includes a hall, a mausoleum, a library, offices, an open courtyard and a minaret.

The National Monument: This Malaysian symbol has been dedicated to those who have died in the cause of peace and freedom for the country. Standing on a commanding site at the Lake Gardens in Kuala Lumpur , the whole area has been reserved for the national monument.

The National Language: "Bahasa Melayu", the national language of Malaysia was established under Article 152 of the Constitution. Used for official purposes includes the federal and state governments, and as defined by the constitutional amendment of 1971 by all authorities and statutory bodies.

The National Car: Though a somewhat unusual symbol, the Proton Saga however has significance for Malaysians which goes beyond the mere production of a passenger car. This project became a reality in September 1985 after its announcement in 1982.

Translation of Surah al-Qadr, verse 1-5:

1. Verily! We have sent it (this Qur'an) down on the night of Al-Qadr (Power).
2. And what will make you know what the night of Al-Qadr (Power) is?
3. The night of Al-Qadr (Power) is better than a thousand months.
4. Therein descend the angels and the Ruh (Gabriel) by Allah's Permission; on every errand.
5. Peace! Until the appearance of dawn.

Summary

This Surah describes Lailatul Qadar, the "Night of Power" in Ramadhan on which Muslims believe the Qur'an was first revealed. The "Spirit" mentioned in verse 4 is commonly interpreted as referring to the angel Jibrail (Gabriel). The "peace" referred to is "security in which Shaytan (Iblis) cannot do any evil or any harm", while Ibn Kathir quotes Ash-Sha'bi as saying that it refers to the angels greeting the people in the mosques throughout the night.

Lailatul Qadar occurs during an odd-numbered night within the last ten days of Ramadan, but its exact date is uncertain; due to the promises made in the Surah and in various hadith. Muslims consider it a particularly good time for prayer, supplication, and repentance to God.

The Green Initiative is an initiative to promote environmental awareness among the students and staff of the Kulliyyah of Science, with the hope that our efforts will reach those outside of the IIUM network as well. It aims to promote awareness concerning environmental issues, to encourage ways to protect and sustain the environment, and to live life in a more environmentally-friendly manner. Allah has also said in Holy Quran: (Surah Al-Rum: 41)

“Mischief has appeared on land and sea because of (the meed) that the hands of men have earned, that (Allah) may give them a taste of some of their deeds: in order that they may turn back (from Evil)”

Based on this verse, Allah reminds us that we are the one who create distructions on earth so, we will feel the results then.Our greediness and bad desires lead us to conquer world has effected our environment with problems and pollutions badly. Therefore, it is our responsiblility to make things right by doing the right things! How? There are a lot of activities from this programme which we can participate such as:

1. Make 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle)as our lifestyle

2. Donate our used paper. There is a donation box provided at KoS Lobby where we can put those papers.

3. “Like” The Green Inititative’s facebook page

4. Expose ourselves to the environmental problems that occur now. We can join the green exhibition at Kos Lobby. Try to spend a little time to read what is posted there. We’ll perhaps get some new info or at least been reminded about what we’ll already know…which I tell you, that we need to be reminded all time J

These are only some of the activities. There are thousands of ways which we may put in actions to save our planet. Be a true Muslim, ponder upon this ayah and let’s go green! Stop polluting our world and make a difference in our lifestyle by changing our attitude towards the environment.
